In the morning, I get up before my alarm and slip out of bed to make coffee, Carl following me like a friendly shadow. I let him out the porch door and zone out as the coffee machine groans and gurgles. My peripherals adjust to Carl’s massive black shape wandering the yard, so when he stops suddenly, it’s easy to notice. My attention pulls groggily toward where he’s paused. Carl bends low, nosing at something on the ground. Wrongness thrums up my spine before I really even process what I’m seeing.

Carl pokes at something bloody and mangled, well past dead.

I don’t think. I scurry out toward him. It’s not until I reach him that my mind considers bears and other woodland predators, or that whatever did this could likely still be around. Carl looks at me with any canine’s excitement in discovering something new and disgusting. I look, then, at the animal corpse at my feet.

It’s got to be some sort of deer. Female, probably, with a short fuzz of brown fur. That’s about all I can tell. The flesh is mangled, the ribcage bloody and exposed, as if someone tried to pull the deer apart the way you do with barbecue. A small amount of blood pools beneath its lifeless sides.

“What the fuck.”

The porch door slides open, revealing Cedric, who looks murderous.

It all happens so quickly. One moment, he’s watching me, stricken with horror in the porch doorway. The next, he’s in motion. He heaves his massive frame over the railing and sprints toward me in a blur of speed. Then, with a snarl and a gnashing of teeth, something swerves past me. The rush of wind nearly knocks me flat. I stumble, fall, and as I’m scrambling to get back up, I see it.

I see him.

What was once Cedric is now an enormous, prowling beast. Like the worst parts of a wolf and a bear combined and multiplied their size twice over. Coarse, deep-brown hair covers every inch of him. Claws as long as my fingers trail through the grass as he circles the mutilated deer. His limbs are too long, with too many joints, and the face when it looks at me is one hairy mass, with two orange eyes glowing up out of the gloom.

My heart stops. Everything narrows to the unnatural creature crouched before me.

In Cedric’s voice, the thing yells, “Get back inside!”

Chills of pure shock and terror rack my frame, but I listen. I get up and fucking run. In moments, I’m back in the house, Carl at my heels, slamming the door shut. I watch, trembling, as the Cedric-Creature circles the house, then the yard. Like some sort of predator. Finally, he reappears, slowly climbing the two porch stairs with two dull thuds of his massive feet. He stands so tall I have to crane my neck to look at him through the glass.

Carl seems unconcerned, but I toggle the flimsy lock on the sliding glass door and back away with a whimper.

“Felicity,” the thing says, slow and sad.
